Ironhash Hill

The walk up Ironhash Hill from Dalbeattie takes about forty minutes if you're moderately fit, and rewards you with views across the Solway Firth that stretch into England on a clear day. It's a proper little peak rather than a mountain - 580 metres - but don't let that fool you. The climb is steep in places and the wind can be bracing at the top.

What you get is moorland walking at its most straightforward. The path is well-trodden, the gradient relentless but not technical, and once you crest the summit the vista opens up. South towards the Cumbrian hills, north back towards the Lowlands, and west towards Kippford, which sits below like a toy village by the water. On misty days it's moody and atmospheric. On sunny ones it's genuinely lovely.

Families with older kids will manage this fine. Younger children might find the sustained climb tiresome, and buggies won't work. Walkers looking for a quick hit of elevation gain without committing to a full day will find it satisfying. History types won't find much up there - it's about the walking and the view, nothing more.

There's no charge, no facilities at the summit, so bring water. Allow two to three hours total including time to sit about and appreciate it. It slots perfectly into a caravan holiday based near Kippford or Sandyhills Bay - those parks are barely twenty minutes away, making it an excellent half-day excursion between beach time or other local exploring.
