Rough Moors Wood

The woods here are genuinely wild - proper mixed forest with decent paths threading through beech, oak, and conifers that feel like they've been left to do their own thing. You're looking at a straightforward forest walk rather than manicured trails, which means it's all the better for it.

It's about four miles from Hereford town centre, so convenient enough for a morning or afternoon ramble without needing to drive halfway across the county. The paths are muddy in places and can be boggy after rain, but that's part of the charm - you actually feel like you're in a wood, not strolling through a country park with facilities and a gift shop.

Walkers will get the most out of it, particularly those who enjoy a bit of solitude and don't mind navigating by instinct rather than waymarked routes. Families with older kids will be fine; younger ones might find it a bit too unstructured. There's no visitor centre or obvious facilities that I could find, so come prepared.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites nearby - Moorhampton is closest at less than five miles, or Heart of the Wye if you fancy glamping - this makes a solid half-day outing. Pair it with a walk along the Wye itself or a pint back in Hereford. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's exactly what you want from a local woodland escape.
