Rough Hills

The Cotswolds aren't known for dramatic woodland, but Rough Hills near Cirencester proves there's proper forest walking to be had if you know where to look. It's a working woodland with decent-sized trees, forest floor trails, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place.

You're looking at a couple of hours maximum here - it's not vast, and the paths are straightforward without being boring. The ground can get muddy after rain, which is fair warning. It's the sort of place walkers appreciate more than families with small kids, though older children who can manage uneven terrain will be fine. There's something satisfying about a forest walk that doesn't demand map-reading skills or scrambling about on rocks.

If you're based at Cirencester Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's barely twenty minutes away - close enough for a morning stroll before heading elsewhere. Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park is further out at six miles, but still manageable as a half-day option. The real benefit of Rough Hills is that it breaks up a Cotswolds park holiday without requiring a long drive. You get forest rather than rolling hills, which is a change of pace.
