Rough Fell

The walk up Rough Fell from Castle Douglas is straightforward enough, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. It's a proper hill - 713 metres of Scottish Lowland scenery that rewards the legwork with views across Galloway that stretch for miles on a clear day.

There's no fancy infrastructure here. You park near Castle Douglas and walk, simple as that. The path isn't desperately difficult, but the ground underfoot can be boggy in places, so decent boots matter. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking your time and actually stopping to look at the view rather than just bagging the summit and heading back down.

It's the sort of walk that appeals to hill walkers who want something genuine without needing to drive three hours to Glen Coe. Families with older kids will manage it fine - younger ones might find the climb tedious, mind you. On a grey day it's less inviting; save this one for decent weather.

The real advantage is location. You're staying at one of the nearby parks - Galloway Glamping and Mollance Farm Caravan Park both rate brilliantly - and you've got proper fell walking on your doorstep. Loch Ken Holiday Park is also within spitting distance if you're after something with a bit more going on. Rough Fell works as a morning walk before heading back for lunch, or an afternoon outing if you want to catch the light across the Solway Firth from the top. It's not famous, it's not crowded, and that's rather the point.
