Rottingdean Recreation Ground car park

The car park at Rottingdean Recreation Ground doesn't sound like much, but it's your gateway to one of Sussex's quieter nature reserves - the sort of place locals know about and visitors miss entirely. Park up and you're immediately into proper downland terrain with chalk grassland that changes character through the seasons. Depending on when you visit, you'll spot different butterflies and wildflowers; spring brings fritillaries, summer gets the orchids going.

It's genuinely free to explore, and you can spend anywhere from an hour pottering about to half a day if you're into serious walking or bird-spotting. The reserve works well for families with older kids who actually want to look at things rather than just run around - younger ones might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes. Bring binoculars and a wildflower guide if you're that way inclined.

Geographically it sits between Brighton and the downs proper, making it an easy add-on if you're staying at Three Ponds Holiday Park nearby. It's far less visited than Cuckmere Haven or some of the better-known spots, which means you get actual peace. The downside is there's not much infrastructure - no café, no facilities to speak of - so come prepared. Go early morning or late afternoon when light's best and you'll avoid what few crowds there are. It's the sort of place that rewards proper attention rather than a quick Instagram stop.
