Queen's Park Brighton & Hove

The moment you step into Queen's Park, you realise Brighton's got more going on than just the seafront. This nature reserve sits right on the city's doorstep, and it's a proper working landscape - chalk grassland, scrub, and wildflower meadows that actually mean something to the local ecosystem. The park's designated as a nature reserve specifically because it works. You're walking through habitat that matters.

It's excellent for naturalists and photographers. The wildflower season (late spring through summer) transforms the place - common spotted orchids, bird's-foot trefoil, and if you're lucky, you'll spot the various butterflies that depend on these plants. Walkers get a decent network of paths without feeling crowded, and it's genuinely refreshing given how built-up Brighton is elsewhere. The views across the South Downs are decent too, though nothing that'll make your jaw drop.

Families with young kids will find it manageable but perhaps a bit quiet - there's no playground or facilities, so it works better for older children who actually want to look at wildflowers and birds rather than climb on things. Expect to spend an hour or two depending on how serious you are about spotting species. Free access, open year-round, though spring and early summer are when it genuinely shines.
