Rostherne Mere

The water at Rostherne Mere sits perfectly still most mornings, which is exactly why you should get here early. It's a proper glacial lake just outside Knutsford, and it's one of those places that rewards you for knowing it exists - most people barrel past on their way to Manchester and miss it entirely.

What you're looking at is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which sounds dull but translates to excellent birdwatching. Great crested grebes, cormorants, and wigeon turn up regularly, and in winter the place becomes serious business for ornithologists. There's a hide on the near side if you've got binoculars and patience.

Walking the perimeter takes roughly an hour at a gentle pace. The path is well-maintained and fairly flat, though the southern section can be boggy after rain. You don't need special boots, just sensible footwear. The views are subtle rather than dramatic - this isn't a mountain lake - but there's something calming about the way the trees frame the water and the light changes across it through the day.

If you're staying at Pickmere Leisure Park just down the road, this makes an excellent morning outing before breakfast gets cold. Families with young kids might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in, though keen birders could happily camp out here for half a day. Go on a weekday if you can - weekends attract the crowds.
