Rossie Hill

The walk up Rossie Hill near Perth isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the views. Once you're up there, the Perthshire landscape spreads out properly - moorland rolling away in all directions, and on a clear day you can make out the Ochil Hills and beyond. It's the kind of spot where you suddenly understand why people bother with Scottish hills.

The summit itself is pretty bare - windswept moorland with heather that turns purple come late summer. There's nothing fancy waiting for you up top, no cairn, no café, just space and air. That's rather the point. You'll want comfortable boots and about an hour return trip, maybe longer if you're not a regular hill walker. The ground can be boggy in places, particularly after rain.

Families with energetic kids will find it manageable. The pace is what matters more than the distance. History types won't find much to examine - this is a walk for the view and the breathing space, not for ruins or archaeological interest.

If you're basing yourself at South Valleyfield Camping and Caravanning Club site nearby, Rossie Hill makes a straightforward morning or afternoon outing. It's the sort of walk that clears your head without eating your entire day. Worth doing if you're in the area; don't go out of your way specially.
