Evelick Castle

The crumbling ruins of Evelick Castle sit quietly on the Perthshire landscape, a few miles outside Perth, and honestly they're easy to miss if you're not looking for them. What remains is essentially a fortified house from the 16th century, reduced now to broken walls and the ghost of what must have been a decent defensive position back when it mattered. You'll get a proper sense of the place in twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type to sit about imagining medieval life and poking around the foundations. There's no visitor centre, no tea room, no interpretation boards - just the stones themselves and whatever you bring to them.

This isn't the castle for people expecting Glamis-style grandeur. It's for walkers who stumble across it whilst exploring the Perthshire countryside, or for history types who collect every scrap of medieval Scots architecture they can find. The setting's pleasant enough, rural and quiet, which counts for something. If you're camping at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site just six miles away, Evelick makes a decent hour's detour on a dry afternoon. Same goes if you're based at South Valleyfield further south - it's a workable leg-stretch between other pursuits.

Getting there requires a bit of navigation; proper postcodes and local directions are essential since signage is minimal. Free admission, no facilities whatsoever. Not for everyone, but if you're after something genuine and understated rather than polished and touristy, you'll find it here.
