Ros Castle

The walk up Ros Castle rewards you with views across the Cheviot Hills and down towards Belford - assuming the Northumberland weather cooperates. It's a proper hill rather than a dramatic peak, but the summit's worth the effort if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around the area.

You'll find the remains of an Iron Age hill fort up here, though don't expect dramatic stonework. The landscape tells the story more than any artifacts do. On a clear day you can see for miles. Midweek visits are notably quieter than weekends, which matters when you're sharing a narrow path with other hikers.

Allow a couple of hours return from the village of Belford, depending on fitness. It's not technical walking, just steady ascent. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it tedious. The path can be boggy after rain, so proper boots make a difference.

The Cheviots have plenty of walking options, so one hill on its own isn't reason enough to base your holiday here - but combined with the broader walking landscape, it's decent.
