Rookwood Golf Course

Rookwood's an 18-hole course just outside Horsham that plays differently depending on which way the wind's coming at you - I found that out the hard way on my first visit. It's a proper parkland layout with enough trees to keep things interesting without feeling claustrophobic, and the greens have genuine character rather than being bland bowling greens.

If you're a mid-to-high handicapper or better, you'll get proper value here. The course doesn't punish wild shots relentlessly, but it won't let you sleepwalk round either. Beginners might find it a touch demanding, though nothing that would send you home cross.

You're looking at a full round taking four hours or so, assuming the course isn't rammed. It's worth ringing ahead to check availability and get the current green fees, as rates shift depending on membership and time of day. Weekday mornings are your best bet for a quieter experience.

Stay at Slinfold Caravan and Motorhome Club - it's only 3.4 miles away - and you've got a decent base for a golfing mini-break. Raylands Country Park and Sumners Ponds are closer to proper family camping with fishing and other bits on offer, so if you're mixing golf with a broader holiday, those work better. The Sussex countryside round here's pleasant enough, though you're not in dramatic walking terrain. Horsham itself has the usual high street amenities and a reasonable pub or two if you fancy a pint after your round.
