Starting from near Newton Abbot, you're out on open moorland within minutes, and there's something quite compelling about that transition from suburban edges to genuine wildness. On a clear day the views westward across Dartmoor are worth the effort; on a cloudy afternoon, it's bit of a trudge to a viewpoint shrouded in mist.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's ideal if you're based nearby and want a two-hour round trip with decent altitude gain without serious scrambling. Not much for young kids unless they're already keen hikers. The moorland terrain is open and exposed, so come prepared for weather shifts. There's no visitor infrastructure up there, so bring what you need.
