Rook Wood

You'll want proper walking boots for this one. Rook Wood is a decent stretch of mixed woodland just outside Tenterden, the kind of place where you can actually lose an hour without meaning to. The paths wind through beech and oak, and on a clear day the light filters through in that way that makes you understand why people bandy about words like 'magical' - though it's really just good forest management and decent weather.

It's walker territory, no question. Families with young kids might manage a short circuit, but anyone expecting a visitor centre or marked trails should manage expectations. What you get is space, quiet, and the occasional bird that makes you stop and listen. The woodland floor's soft underfoot, and there are spots where you can sit without feeling like you're trespassing.

There's no entry fee that I'm aware of, and no time limit - you're not paying to be here. How long you stay depends entirely on your pace and whether you're actually looking at things or just trudging through. Two hours gives you a proper explore; forty minutes if you're in a rush.
