Romano-British Farmstead

You're standing on a windswept Northumberland hillside looking at what remains of a Romano-British settlement from around 1,800 years ago. It's not dramatic stuff - more subtle archaeology than instant gratification. What you get are the earthwork remains of a farmstead: ditches, banks, and post holes that show where buildings once stood when Roman soldiers and settlers occupied this corner of Britain.

The site rewards patient walkers and anyone seriously interested in how ordinary people lived during the Roman occupation. Kids under twelve might find it a bit underwhelming unless you've done the groundwork explaining what they're looking at. But if you're the sort who enjoys piecing together fragments of daily life from the landscape itself, it's genuinely absorbing. The views across the Northumberland countryside aren't bad either.

Head to Hexham first - it's your nearest proper town - and you can combine this with other Roman sites in the area. It's free to visit and you can take your own time exploring. Allow an hour, maybe two if you're thorough. Best visited on a clearer day when you can see the surrounding landscape properly; mist tends to make the earthworks harder to read.

Wild Northumberland Glamping sits just over five miles away, making it a decent spot if you want to build a longer archaeological exploration around a comfortable stay. The farmstead fits well into a broader Hadrian's Wall itinerary rather than standing alone as a day-trip destination.
