Roman Villa

The mosaic floors here are genuinely spectacular - the kind of thing that stops you in your tracks even if you're not normally bothered with archaeology. This is a proper Roman villa, unearthed just outside Farnham, and what remains tells you exactly how the wealthy lived when legionnaires were still patrolling Surrey.

You're looking at the foundations and lower walls of what was clearly a substantial house, complete with heating systems (hypocausts, if you want to get technical) and those incredible geometric tile patterns. The scale of it is what gets you - this wasn't some modest farmstead. Someone was throwing serious money around here nearly two thousand years ago.

History enthusiasts will spend a good hour picking through the details, reading the interpretation boards, and imagining Roman dinner parties in what is now quiet Surrey countryside. Kids under ten might lose interest after thirty minutes unless they're already into that sort of thing. It's not flashy or interactive - just genuinely old stones in the ground.

Farnham itself is close enough for a quick visit if you're basing yourself at somewhere like Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat down the road. Worth combining with a walk through the nearby countryside, really. The site itself is free to access, which is the proper way to do it. Bring decent shoes though - the ground can be muddy, and there's not much shelter if the weather turns.
