Roman Settlement

The Roman Settlement east of Peterborough is one of those places that rewards curiosity more than casual passing. You won't find much in the way of visitor infrastructure - no gift shop, no café, just the bones of what was once a proper Roman community laid out across the fenland. Walking the site gives you a genuine sense of how the Romans adapted to life on the edge of the Wash, with traces of roads, building foundations, and pottery scattered where archaeologists have worked.

It's the kind of spot that appeals to history types and families who've got kids interested in Roman Britain. You'll need to be self-sufficient - bring a map, do your homework beforehand, and expect to spend an hour or so depending on how thorough you want to be. The landscape itself is quite telling: flat, waterlogged in places, the sort of terrain that makes you understand why the Romans built what they did, where they did it.

If you're based at Ferry Meadows, just three miles away, this makes an excellent half-day outing before heading back for a proper meal. It won't fill a whole day on its own, but combined with walks along the Nene Valley or other Cambridgeshire sites, it slots in well. Nene Outdoors is similarly close if you're after a quieter base. Go in drier months - the site's not somewhere you want to visit after heavy rain.
