Roman Fort (Site)

The foundations are barely there, to be honest - just a scatter of stone footings and a slight earthwork rise where the Romans once stationed soldiers to keep watch over the Pennines. This is what's left of the fort near Elland, a place that mattered hugely around AD 80 but now requires a bit of imagination to bring back to life.

What you're standing on is roughly 2,000 years of history. The garrison here would have been small, maybe a few hundred men, guarding the frontier between the lowlands and the wild upland terrain. Walk the site and you can make out where the fort's walls ran, where soldiers drilled, where supplies got stored. It's free to visit and there's no faffing about with opening hours - you just show up.

Honestly, this works best if you've got a real interest in Roman Britain or archaeology. Families might find it a bit abstract - there are no reconstructions or visitor facilities, just the actual remains and whatever you bring in your head. Give it twenty minutes to an hour depending on how deep you want to dig into it.
