Roman Fort

The Roman Fort sits on the North Yorkshire moors like a half-forgotten puzzle, and frankly, it's the sort of place that rewards patience more than instant gratification. What you're looking at are the earthworks and foundations where a garrison once stood keeping watch over the landscape - no polished museum here, just the bones of what was. The remains are substantial enough if you know what you're looking for: you can trace the fort's outline, spot where the walls ran, and get a genuine sense of the strategic positioning. It's not Hadrian's Wall, though. Walking the perimeter takes about twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're reading the interpretation boards properly.

Historie-hungry types will get more from this than casual visitors, to be honest. Children under ten might find it a bit abstract - there's not much that jumps out visually. But if you're staying at Broadings Farm Caravan Site nearby and you've got an afternoon free, it's worth the drive out from Whitby. The moors around here are the real draw anyway, so combine it with a proper walk and you've got a decent half-day sorted.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow an hour if you're thorough, less if you're just ticking boxes. Best in good weather - this exposed moorland gets bleak in the rain, and the site offers zero shelter. Go for the landscape and the sense of standing where Romans once stood, rather than expecting dramatic ruins.
