Roman Fort

The Romans left their mark all over Scotland, but most folk rush straight past this one near Castle Douglas without realising what they're standing on. A proper archaeological site with genuine remains of a Roman fort that once guarded the Loch Ken approaches - you can still make out the defensive ditches and ramparts if you know what to look for, though honestly it takes a bit of imagination to picture the soldiers marching about two thousand years ago.

What you get here is more about the walk and the setting than dramatic ruins. The landscape does the heavy lifting - rolling Dumfries & Galloway countryside, views across to the loch, the kind of place where you can understand why the Romans bothered building a garrison. Bring decent shoes and allow an hour or so to properly explore; it's not a quick photo stop.

History enthusiasts will get far more from this than young children, who'll likely tire once they've scrambled on the earthworks. The site works best as part of a wider ramble rather than a standalone visit - combine it with walking routes around Loch Ken itself.
