Roman Fell

The walk up Roman Fell from Appleby-in-Westmorland is straightforward enough, but you won't find crowds or much in the way of facilities. It's a decent fell rather than a dramatic one - craggy in places, with decent views across the Eden Valley when the weather plays ball. The fell sits at 658 metres, so it's a proper leg-stretcher rather than a full day's commitment.

Walkers will get the most from this. There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no interpretive boards - just you, the fell, and the views. On a clear day you can see the Pennines and beyond. The approach is straightforward from the village, which means you can be back for a decent lunch without too much faffing about. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're not dawdling.

Honestly, it's the sort of fell that justifies a visit if you're already in Appleby exploring the market town or staying at Wild Rose Holiday Park nearby. It's cracking as a morning outing - the paths are well-trodden and easy to follow. But don't come out of your way for it alone. It's a genuine walker's peak rather than a destination attraction, which means it suits people after a no-nonsense Pennine ramble without the queues you'd get elsewhere. Free, naturally. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the paths aren't boggy.
