Roffey Recreation Ground

Roffey Recreation Ground is a modest but genuinely pleasant green space on Horsham's doorstep - the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss. It's essentially a nature reserve with open grassland, tree-lined paths, and enough wildlife habitat to keep birdwatchers and naturalists occupied for an hour or two without breaking a sweat.

What you're looking at is grassland management done properly - they've let sections grow wild to encourage insects and ground-nesting birds, so the whole place has a slightly less manicured feel than your average council park. There are proper walking trails meandering through, and genuinely decent birdwatching opportunities if you're into that. Kids will enjoy exploring the rougher bits, though it's not a playground-type situation.

Families staying at nearby Slinfold Caravan and Motorhome Club or Sumners Ponds Fishery would be wise to factor this in as an easy morning or late afternoon wander. It's free to access and you can potter about for as little as 30 minutes or take a proper hour if you're the type who stops to identify things. Spring and early summer are best - that's when the birds are most active and the wildflowers actually mean something.

Don't expect dramatic views or any particular infrastructure. This is proper Sussex countryside in miniature, five minutes from Horsham town centre. Honest, unpretentious, and exactly what it claims to be.
