Roddach Bow

The Roddach Bow is a proper riverside nature reserve that sits about five miles from Forres, tucked into the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people move to Aberdeenshire and never leave. It's a working wetland where the river does its thing - widening, slowing, creating the perfect habitat for wading birds and the occasional otter if you're lucky enough.

What you're really here for is the walking. There are paths that wind through the reserve, nothing too demanding, but proper enough that you'll want decent boots if there's been rain. The birdwatching is the main draw - bring binoculars and patience. Herons are almost guaranteed; you might spot redshank or curlew depending on the season. It's the kind of place where an hour passes without you noticing, though families with very small children might find it a bit limited. There's not much in the way of facilities, so come prepared.

Best visited in spring or autumn when migration brings a wider variety of species through. Winter's quiet but atmospheric; summer can be midgy, to be honest.
