The open heathland stretches out below Guildford with genuine wildness - gorse, bracken, and the sort of windswept views that remind you why the Surrey Hills matter. Rodborough Common is one of those places locals know and visitors often miss, which is precisely why it's worth the detour.

It's a proper walk rather than a stroll. The terrain is uneven, the paths wind through heather, and you'll want decent boots if it's been wet. Most people allow a couple of hours to get the measure of it - long enough to reach the high ground and feel genuinely away from things, short enough that even restless teenagers won't complain endlessly. The views back towards Guildford are excellent on a clear day, and the common itself is quiet on weekdays.

History types will note the Bronze Age barrows scattered across the land - tumuli that mark ancient burials, now just gentle hummocks in the grass. It's the sort of landscape that's barely changed in centuries.

Families with young children might find it a bit much unless they're keen walkers already. It's more suited to adults, capable kids, and anyone after genuine countryside without the manicured feeling. The nearby glamping options at Little Cowdray Farm and Firesyde both sit within easy reach, making this a logical half-day circuit if you're based in the area. Free to access, no facilities to speak of - bring water. Go early morning or late afternoon to dodge the blustery midday wind.
