Go midweek if you can stomach the drive from your caravan - weekends get busier with local dog walkers, which breaks the spell a bit. Spring's lovely here when the ground cover's fresh, though honestly, winter has its own appeal once the leaves drop and you can actually see into the wood properly.

If you're based at Eastwood End Caravan Park or Kiss wood cabins, Rock Wood slots in nicely for a half-day outing. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it scratches that woodland itch when you've tired of the manicured park facilities. Come for the quiet, not for the postcard moments.
