Rock and Spindle

Two sandstone pillars jutting out of the East Sands near St Andrews - that's the Rock and Spindle, and honestly, it's one of those landmarks you'll either find genuinely striking or slightly underwhelming depending on what you're expecting.

The formations themselves are proper geological oddities: eroded remnants of volcanic pipes from about 320 million years ago. Walk along the beach from St Andrews and you'll spot them without fuss - they're not massive, but they do arrest your eye against the golden sand and grey Fife coastline. The Spindle is the thinner column; the Rock is the chunkier one. Local legend claims a woman was trapped in the rock as punishment for breaking her marriage vows, which is the sort of grim medieval tale that makes these things stick in your memory.

It's a free attraction that'll take you maybe twenty minutes if you're actually examining it properly. The real value is in the walk itself - the East Sands are lovely for a coastal stroll, especially if the weather's behaving. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming as a standalone destination, but it works brilliantly as part of a wider coastal explore from St Andrews.

If you're basing yourself at Craigtoun Meadows Holiday Park or Off the Track, both within easy striking distance, pair this with the town's old streets and castle ruins for a proper half-day. Go when the tide's out - you'll get the best angle on the rocks and easier access along the beach.
