Rochallie Hill Plantation

The moment you step into Rochallie Hill, you're walking beneath proper old-growth conifers that block out half the sky. It's a working forest plantation rather than some manicured tourist attraction, which is precisely why it works so well. The paths wind through dense stands of Scots pine and spruce, occasionally opening onto clearings where the Perthshire landscape spreads out below you. You'll see timber operations happening - lorries, felled logs, the machinery of actual forestry - which some find a bit industrial, but it's honest and real.

This is squarely walker territory. The trails are well-marked and range from gentle woodland strolls to more demanding climbs if you fancy elevation gain. Most people spend 90 minutes to two hours here without feeling rushed. The forest floor is soft underfoot, muddy in wet weather, which is reason enough to bring proper boots. Bring binoculars too - the bird life is decent, and there's the occasional chance of spotting roe deer if you're quiet enough.

It works brilliantly as a morning's outing from Corriefodly Holiday Park just down the road, or as a break-up activity if you're based at Blairgowrie Holiday Park for a longer stay. The nearest town, Blairgowrie itself, is close enough that you can do lunch there afterwards. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no faffing about - just forest and footpaths. Families with energetic kids will get miles out of it. History buffs might find it less rewarding. Admission appears to be free, which makes it hard to complain about.
