Robingate Wood

Dense woodland south of Tunbridge Wells, Robingate Wood is the sort of place where you can lose a couple of hours wandering without seeing another soul. The paths wind through proper old-growth forest - oak, beech, and pine creating a cathedral-like canopy that blocks out most of the sky even on bright days.

It's ideal for walkers who want something less manicured than the parks around here. There are no obvious trails marked out, which means you're either exploring with a map or following your instincts, and frankly that's half the appeal. Kids won't find play equipment or information boards - this is just woods being woods. But if they're the type to build dens and hunt for wildlife, they'll be in heaven.

Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to really get into the wood and back without feeling rushed. Spring brings bluebells, autumn is when the light filters through the canopy just right. Winter can be muddy and slippery, so decent boots matter.

It works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon escape while staying at Hopgarden Glamping and Camping, which is only a short drive away. After an hour in the wood you'll actually appreciate the comfort of your glamping pod rather than just tolerating it. Whether it's free or requires a permit isn't entirely clear, but that's typical for Sussex woodland.
