Robin Hood's Barrow

A grassy mound in the Hampshire countryside might not sound thrilling, but Robin Hood's Barrow is worth tracking down if you're staying in the Stockbridge area. It's a Bronze Age burial mound - essentially a tumulus - that's been here for roughly 3,500 years, though the "Robin Hood" bit is pure Victorian fancy. Nothing to do with the outlaw whatsoever.

The appeal is straightforward: you get an archaeological site that's genuinely old, accessible via a short walk, and free to visit. It's the sort of place where history feels tangible rather than locked behind museum glass. The mound itself sits in open countryside, so on a clear day the walk to reach it is often nicer than the destination.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, particularly if they're interested in Bronze Age settlement patterns. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming after five minutes - there's not much to do beyond walk around it and read the information board, if one exists. Serious walkers often tuck it into a longer ramble through the Test Valley.

Stockbridge makes the obvious base, and both Hookpit Farm Caravan Site and Stockbridge View are close enough for a morning outing. Allow 20 minutes to an hour depending on how you approach it - either a quick stop during a country drive or part of a proper walking day. The site is open year-round and free, making it a low-pressure addition to a park holiday rather than a headline attraction.
