Riverside Park

The River Wear cuts through Durham like a proper ribbon of green, and Riverside Park sits right along it - a genuinely pleasant spot for a walk without the crowds you'd find at some of the cathedral-adjacent attractions. You're looking at a nature reserve that actually feels like one: paths along the riverbank, local wildlife, and enough space that you won't feel boxed in even on a decent day.

It's the sort of place where walkers genuinely get their money's worth. Families with older kids will do fine here, though toddlers might find the lack of facilities a bit limiting. The main draw is simply walking the riverside itself - watch for kingfishers if you're lucky, and the trees overhead make it feel miles away from the city centre even though Durham's essentially on your doorstep.

Bring decent shoes because the ground can be muddy after rain, and allow a solid hour minimum if you're doing a proper loop rather than a quick stroll. It's free to access, which is refreshing, and genuinely works as a half-day activity if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Finchale Abbey Residential & Touring Park is barely twenty minutes away, or Beamish Glamping if you're after something with a bit more comfort. The reserve fits well into a Durham holiday where you're mixing cathedral visits with actual outdoors time. Don't expect manicured gardens or visitor facilities, though. This is real countryside, just happens to be very near a city.
