Riverside Park

The River Bollin winds through this stretch of Cheshire countryside like it's got nowhere particular to be, and that's rather the point. Riverside Park is a proper nature reserve where you actually see things - kingfishers if you're lucky, brown trout in the shallows, the usual parade of ducks and herons. The walking paths are straightforward enough, nothing that'll have you scrambling up hillsides, just gentle wandering alongside the water with the occasional wooden bench when your legs need a rest. It's the sort of place where twenty minutes turns into two hours without you noticing.

Walkers will get the most from this one, especially those who like their exercise mixed with bird spotting. Families with younger children find it manageable - there's enough to look at without demanding endless patience. The reserve sits just outside Macclesfield, making it an easy diversion if you're staying at Sycamore Farm Caravan Site or Kiss wood cabins nearby.

Timing matters. Early morning or dusk gives you better wildlife watching. Summer's pleasant but can bring crowds; spring and autumn are genuinely lovely when you've got the paths mostly to yourself. The reserve is free to access, which is always welcome, though it's worth checking locally before you visit as facilities can be seasonal. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're actually interested in what's happening along the riverbank. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what you want from a nature walk in the North West.
