River Woods

The Dee and Don rivers slice through dense woodland here, and walking these trails feels properly immersive - no manicured paths, just genuine forest floor underfoot. River Woods near Ellon is the sort of place where you actually hear water running before you see it, and the canopy does its job keeping the midges at bay when the wind's up.

Walking routes wind through the trees, hugging the riverbanks in places. The main appeal is the river itself - it's fast-moving, genuinely scenic, and the woodland's got that slightly wild feel you don't get in managed country estates. Serious walkers love it; families with small kids might find it a bit relentless on the legs, though older ones will manage fine if they're keen on adventure.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper circuit. There's no obvious visitor infrastructure, so come prepared - decent boots matter here, and the ground gets boggy after rain. Worth timing it for dry spells if you can.

It slots nicely into an Aberdeenshire trip, especially if you're basing yourself at Ythan Valley Campsite three-and-a-bit miles away. The campsite itself gets solid reviews, and you're close enough to Ellon for supplies without the woodland feeling remote. The River Woods work best as a morning walk before heading elsewhere, rather than an all-day destination, but they're genuinely good for clearing your head.
