Ord Hill

The walk up Ord Hill from Ellon takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the effort pays off with proper views across Aberdeenshire's rolling farmland. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a gentle, tree-lined climb than a scramble - but that's precisely why it works well for families who want something achievable without drama.

You get to the trig point and suddenly the landscape opens up. On a clear day the views stretch far enough to make the climb feel worthwhile. It's the sort of hill that rewards you without punishing you, which means most abilities can manage it without faffing about with rope or technical kit.

Historically it's got some archaeological interest if that's your thing, though you'll need to do a bit of research beforehand - the hill itself won't spell it out for you. That said, the actual walk is the draw here rather than any particular feature at the top.

If you're staying at Ythan Valley Campsite just down the road, or Hillhead Hideaways a bit further out, this makes a solid half-day outing. Go midweek if possible - weekends can get busy, and you'll want some peace to enjoy the views properly. The ground can be boggy in places after rain, so decent boots aren't optional. Allow two hours return if you're not rushing, plus time to sit at the top and actually look around.
