Andy Scott (Otter Statue)

There's a bronze otter frozen mid-dive on the banks of the River Ythan near Ellon, and it's genuinely rather good. Andy Scott, the sculptor, has captured something vital about these creatures - that moment of pure purpose just before they slip into the water. You'll find it easily enough if you know where to look, though it's not sign-posted to death, which somehow makes stumbling upon it more rewarding.

The statue works best for anyone with even a passing interest in wildlife or contemporary sculpture. You won't need more than fifteen minutes here unless you're the type to sit on the bank watching the actual otters - and yes, they do appear along this stretch, particularly early morning or dusk. Walkers will appreciate how it slots into a longer riverside ramble. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming as a standalone stop, but it's a decent excuse to get out of the car and stretch legs between other Highland activities.

It's free to visit, naturally. If you're camped at Ythan Valley Campsite just a few miles down the road - and it's a solid four-star spot - this becomes an obvious morning or evening walk. The light here in late afternoon is particularly good if you've got a camera. There's no cafe or facilities, so come prepared. The surrounding countryside is pleasant rather than dramatic, proper open Aberdeenshire farmland, which is fine. Worth the detour if you're in the area anyway. Don't go out of your way specifically for it.
