River Towy

The River Towy winds through Carmarthenshire like the spine of the region itself. This isn't some dramatic mountain torrent - it's a proper meandering river that curves through countryside you'll want to linger in, whether you're after a gentle riverside walk or seriously keen on fishing.

The stretch around Llandeilo is where most visitors spend time. You can follow the riverside paths here without much faffing about, spotting herons and the occasional cormorant if you're patient. The water itself is clear enough when the weather's been dry, and walkers tend to find the terrain manageable rather than punishing. It's the sort of place where you wander for two hours without realising the time's gone.

Families with younger kids will find the easy paths satisfying, though there's nothing dramatic enough to keep them transfixed for a full day. Serious anglers, though - this river matters to them. Salmon and trout both run here, and the fishing rights are sorted through local clubs and permissions.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Ravenscroft Retreats or Gelli Glamping are both within five miles - the Towy gives you a proper walk without needing to drive elsewhere. Head out early morning, when the light's best and you'll have the banks to yourself.

No admission fees, no visitor centre, no fuss. That's rather the point. Allow a couple of hours for a decent wander, longer if you're the type who sits by water with a flask.
