River Side Walk

The walk along the riverbank near Ellon is one of those stretches where you actually notice the landscape changing beneath your feet. Water meadows give way to woodland, and if you time it right - early morning or dusk - you'll see roe deer moving through the scrub. The Ythan River itself winds through here, and the banks are thick with riverside plants that shift with the seasons.

This isn't a destination walk with a viewpoint at the end. It's the kind of thing you do when you're staying at Ythan Valley Campsite - just four miles away - and the weather's decent. An hour or two is enough to cover a satisfying stretch without getting bored. Birdwatchers will have their heads up the whole time; younger kids might find the lack of a clear "destination" a bit anticlimactic unless they're keen on spotting things.

There's no admission charge, which is proper. The path is straightforward enough, though it can get boggy after rain - wellies aren't optional in winter. Go in spring or early autumn when the light is generous and the midges haven't gone mad.

It works well as a break-day activity if you're using Aberdeenshire as a base for outdoor holidays. Nothing dramatic, nothing Instagram-famous. Just a decent Scottish river walk that reminds you why you came north in the first place.
