The River Nevern floods its banks seasonally, and when it does, you get something rather special - a temporary wetland that attracts wildfowl in serious numbers. This conservation area near Newport is less a manicured visitor attraction and more a working wildlife site, which means you're watching birds doing their thing, not performing for a camera.

It's genuinely worth a morning's walk if you're into birdwatching or just fancy seeing curlews, snipe, and teal without the crowds you'd get at bigger reserves. The landscape itself - open marshland backed by gentle Welsh hills - has that raw, unfinished feel that either appeals to you or doesn't. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no café. You rock up, bring binoculars, and watch. Winter and early spring are peak seasons when the water levels are highest and bird populations densest.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Llwyngwair Manor is barely half a mile away - and you can slip over for an hour or two without committing to a full day out. It works perfectly as part of a Pembrokeshire walking break, especially if you're base camping and want something low-key between bigger days at Saundersfoot or the coastal paths. The access is straightforward from Newport, but check conditions before you go - the wetland's appeal depends entirely on water levels. In summer, when it's dry, there's honestly not much to see.
