River Coln, Fairford, Gloucestershire

The River Coln slides through Fairford like it's got somewhere better to be, which it does - eventually reaching the Thames a few miles downstream. It's a proper chalk stream, the kind that runs gin-clear when the light's right, and the whole stretch around town is brilliant for a gentle walk without any of the crowds you'd get at the more famous Cotswold spots.

You won't find visitor centres or marked trails here. Just pull into Fairford, find a spot near the high street, and head down to the water. The riverbanks are accessible in places, lined with willows and alder trees that look like they've been there since before anyone invented tourism. Herons work the shallows if you're quiet about it. Trout too, if you're the fishing type - locals definitely are.

Walkers get the most from it, honestly. Twenty minutes of riverside pottering beats an hour in most gift shops. Families with young kids will manage half that before someone wants an ice cream, and that's fine - Fairford's got everything you need on the high street. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. The water quality is decent enough that you'll spot proper wildlife rather than supermarket trolleys.

There's no admission charge because there's nothing formal about it. Free parking in town, though summer weekends can get tight. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when the light's golden and you've got the banks mostly to yourself. Couples up a pair of holiday parks nearby - Great Farm's just a mile and a half off if you're looking for a base - but the river itself is the whole point here. Honest and unpretentious.
