Ripon Waterside & Marina

The River Ure widens into something rather special just outside Ripon town centre - a proper working marina where narrowboats sit alongside pleasure cruisers and the water reflects old stone buildings on the far bank. This is Ripon Waterside, and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-off.

You can walk the full length of the marina on the towpath, watching boats come and go, spotting the odd heron lurking in the shallows. The real appeal is in sitting on a bench with a coffee and actually noticing things - the light on the water, the way the town rises behind you, the peace of it all. Some days you'll catch activity on the water itself; other times it's just you and a few moored boats.

It works brilliantly if you're based at Riverside Meadows just 1.6 miles away - close enough for a short morning walk before heading elsewhere, or a late afternoon stroll when the light goes golden. Woodhouse Farm and Sleningford Watermill aren't far either if you're exploring the wider area. The walk is dead easy, flat, and takes as long as you fancy. In warmer months when boat traffic picks up, it's noticeably livelier. Winter can feel a bit quiet.

There's no charge to walk here, and it costs nothing to watch the world go by. What there isn't much of is formal facilities - it's not set up for families wanting an afternoon of activities. But for a proper bit of local character, a bit of water-watching and a walk that actually feels like somewhere real rather than a tourist attraction, it's worth the trip from your caravan.
