Riplington Hanger

The beech woods at Riplington Hanger drop steeply down a chalk hillside just outside Petersfield, offering proper forest walking without the crowds you'd find at some of Hampshire's more famous hangers. It's a straightforward spot - ancient woodland on a south-facing slope, the kind of place where the trees are old enough to have real character and the ground's soft with leaf litter underfoot.

What you actually get here is a decent network of paths through mature beech, some steep enough to test your legs on the way down, easier on the return. On a clear day the views across the South Downs from the top are worth the walk, though you won't find any facilities or signage to speak of. Allow a solid hour if you're taking it properly, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping to catch your breath and look around.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile. Kids might get restless unless they're the sort who enjoy proper woods rather than playgrounds - it's not a casual amble. The forest canopy's thick enough that it stays cool even when the rest of Hampshire's baking, which counts in summer.

The combination of woodland walking and easy access to Petersfield town for lunch afterwards keeps it simple.
