Ring's End Local Nature Reserve

The Cambridgeshire wetlands around March have a particular magic, especially when you stumble upon Ring's End Local Nature Reserve tucked just outside town. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-off, with reed beds and open water that shift character depending on the light and season.

You'll spot birds here - lots of them. The reserve is genuinely good for birdwatching, whether you're a twitcher with binoculars or just someone who enjoys seeing a kingfisher flash across the water. Water voles potter about if you're patient enough, and in spring the whole thing comes alive with migrating species. Bring decent shoes; it can get boggy.

This is less of a formal attraction with set opening times and more of a local space that's always accessible. Free to visit, which is a relief. Allow an hour minimum for a proper circuit, longer if you've got a camera or young naturalists in tow. Kids get something out of it - spotting wildlife keeps them engaged - though it's not a playground substitute.
