The Wharfe Valley around Richmond holds some of Yorkshire's finest riverside walking country, and the nature reserve here is where you actually get close to what makes it special. Kingfishers dart between the rocks, otters have returned to the water in recent years, and in spring the whole place erupts with wildflowers along the banks. It's proper walking territory - you're not getting a manicured experience here, just genuine moorland and woodland where the river does what it wants.

This works best for walkers with decent boots and a bit of stamina. Families with young children might find the terrain tricky, though there are gentler stretches if you pick your route carefully. History types should know the reserve sits within view of Richmond's medieval castle, so you're walking through landscape that's been lived in for centuries. Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to see anything properly.

The nearest base is Skipton, about twenty minutes' drive away, but you're much better off parking closer to the reserve itself and making a day of it. Bolton Abbey Estate's caravan site sits just under two miles away and is genuinely excellent - the 5-star rating isn't gimmicky. Howgill Lodge and Breaks Fold Farm offer alternatives if Bolton's full. All three give you proper access to this stretch of the Wharfe without being tourist traps.

Go in late spring or early autumn when the water's not too high and the midges aren't quite so murderous. Early morning gives you the best chance of spotting wildlife without crowds.
