Rhyn Park

The River Tanat winds through Rhyn Park like it owns the place, and frankly it does. This nature reserve sits just over the border in Shropshire, close enough to Wrexham that you can pop over without much fuss, and it's the sort of spot that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick photo stop.

What you're getting here is genuine riverside woodland - the kind of place where you might actually spot something interesting if you're patient. Otters use these banks, kingfishers flash past if you're lucky, and the mix of native trees creates decent habitat for birds and insects. There's a decent walk to be had following the river, picking your way between the water and the tree line. It's not challenging terrain, but it's real countryside rather than a manicured stroll.

Families with younger kids might find an hour enough, though older ones who like spotting wildlife could easily spend a whole morning here. If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Archers' Meadow is excellent - this makes a natural morning activity before heading somewhere more structured for the afternoon. Go in spring or early summer when the river's properly alive and the birds are vocal. Autumn works too if you fancy watching the light change through the trees. The free access is a genuine bonus - no ticking boxes, just show up and explore. Wear decent shoes though. The ground gets boggy after rain, and that's when you'll find the best wildlife anyway.
