Rhyl Clock Tower

The Clock Tower stands sentinel over Rhyl's seafront, a Victorian structure that's seen better days but carries the town's maritime heritage in its stonework. Built in the 1870s, it's one of those Victorian oddities that marks the spot where Rhyl decided to get proper ambitious - when the railway arrived and suddenly everyone wanted to holiday by the sea.

You can't miss it walking along the promenade, and that's rather the point. It's free to look at (obviously), though the tower itself isn't open to climb inside these days. Rhyl itself has that faded seaside-town charm - arcade games, fish and chips, the usual. The Clock Tower is the punctuation mark at the end of that sentence. Go for the architecture and the sense of Edwardian optimism frozen in stone, not for interactive exhibits or lengthy visitor experience. It's authentic heritage without the museum gift shop. Park at or near the seafront, bring no expectations beyond a quick look, and you'll leave oddly satisfied.
