Rhyader Baptist Church

The chapel sits quietly on the high street in Rhayader, a grey-stone Victorian building that most visitors drive straight past. It's a Baptist Church, built in the 1800s when Nonconformist chapels were thick on the ground across Mid Wales, and it tells you something about the town's religious heritage that it's still here, still standing.

Inside is modest but genuine - wooden pews, a simple pulpit, the sort of place where the congregation would have known each other for generations. There's nothing flashy about it, which is rather the point. If you're interested in how ordinary Victorians actually worshipped, away from the grand Anglican establishments, this is the real thing.

Honestly, you won't spend long here. Twenty minutes tops, unless you catch someone to talk to about the building's history. It works best as a break during a Rhayader walk rather than a destination in itself. The town itself is worth a wander - it's the gateway to the Elan Valley reservoirs, which is where the views actually are.

Based at either Wyeside (just 400 metres away) or Elan Oaks, you could easily pop in between exploring the surrounding countryside. Free to visit, no formal opening hours that I can establish, so treat it as you would any small country chapel - respectfully, and ideally during daylight.
