Waum Capel Parc

The Wye is the star - it's a serious river, and the paths run close enough that you get the full drama of it without needing scrambling boots. Woodland sections offer proper shade, which matters on the handful of scorching days we get.

Family groups with young kids will manage an hour or so before fidgeting sets in; older children who actually want to be outdoors rather than in a gift shop will get more from it. History enthusiasts should know the wider area - Elan Valley's reservoirs are nearby and worth a separate trip.

You're staying within walking distance if you're based at Wyeside Caravan & Camping Park, which is barely a quarter-mile away. Elan Oaks and The Pines are equally close for a Rhayader base. Admission details aren't clear online, but the Wye Valley generally operates on trust rather than turnstiles. Allow two hours minimum; longer if you're the lingering type.
