History buffs will find themselves here for a good two hours minimum. There's enough to genuinely absorb without feeling like you're trudging through endless glass cases. The presentation avoids the dusty, untouched-since-1987 feeling that plagues some regimental museums - staff clearly care about keeping it relevant. Families with teenagers interested in military history will get far more from it than younger children, though the uniform displays usually catch everyone's eye.

It's free admission, which is decent value for a focused look at Hampshire's military heritage. Allow 90 minutes to two hours depending on how deep you want to go. If you're staying at Rookesbury Park or ScottsHaven - both solid caravan sites within a few miles - it's an easy rainy-day option that actually delivers more substance than you'd expect. Worth the trip if you're into regimental history; less essential if you're just passing through Southampton.
