Rhossili Bay

Three miles of golden sand sweep around this magnificent curve of coastline, backed by towering cliffs and the distinctive hump of Worm's Head island at the far end. Standing at the National Trust car park above the beach, you'll understand immediately why this stretch of the Gower Peninsula consistently ranks among Britain's finest beaches.

The walk down takes about ten minutes on a well-maintained path, though it's fairly steep coming back up. Once on the sand, you can walk for ages - low tide reveals a vast expanse perfect for ball games and kite flying. Surfers love the consistent waves, while families appreciate the lifeguarded section during summer months.

Worm's Head dominates the western end, accessible on foot at low tide if you time it right and fancy the adventure. The views from the clifftops are every bit as spectacular as those from the beach itself.

It's completely free and open all year, though parking costs a few pounds. Allow half a day minimum - you'll want longer if the weather's decent. Early morning visits reward you with fewer crowds and often the best light for photos.

With several holiday parks within easy reach including Gower Holiday Village and Hillend Camping Park, Rhossili makes a brilliant base for exploring the wider peninsula. Just don't expect to have it to yourself in summer.
