Rewe Mead nature reserve

Rewe Mead is a proper Somerset wetland - the kind of place where you'll actually see things rather than just walk around looking at nothing. It's a working nature reserve just outside Taunton, managed for the wildlife that depends on it: waders, wildfowl, the occasional otter if you're lucky enough to be there at the right time. The habitat is mostly open water and reedbed, so there's sight-line across it all - no trudging through dense woodland wondering if you're anywhere near the good bits.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from this. Bring binoculars or a camera with decent zoom. The paths are manageable, nothing too steep or boggy unless it's been raining hard. Spring and autumn are best for migratory birds, though there's usually something worth looking at year-round.

It's free to access, and most people allow an hour or so depending on how serious they are about spotting things. If you're based at Waterrow Touring Park just down the road - under four miles away - it makes an excellent half-morning excursion before or after exploring the Blackdown Hills. Middle Stone Farm Glamping is a bit further out at six miles, but still well within reach for a casual visit.

The real value here is the peace. You won't find crowds or gift shops. Just reeds, water, birds, and sky.
