Reticulated Giraffes

The reticulated giraffes at this Essex zoo are genuinely striking - those geometric patterns on their hides look almost computer-generated when you're standing close enough. You can spend a good hour watching them move about, particularly if you catch feeding time when the keepers explain what they eat and why their spots matter for temperature regulation. It's the kind of thing that'll properly engage kids aged five to twelve, though teenagers might feel they've seen it all before on a wildlife documentary.

The enclosure itself is spacious enough that the animals don't feel cramped, which matters more than you'd think when you're forking out admission. Plan on two hours if you're doing the full zoo circuit - there's other animals worth seeing too - or just pop in for the giraffe experience if you're short on time. Go mid-week outside school holidays and you'll avoid the worst of the crowds scrambling for photos.

It's well positioned near Colchester, making it an easy fit if you're staying at one of the local parks. Colchester Country Park is the closest option at under three miles away, though if you want something with a bit more polish, Swallows Field Glamping Pods and Teybrook Orchard both offer proper facilities. The zoo itself is a decent rainy-day option when the weather's turned - still entertaining enough to justify the trip, even if it's not going to be the highlight of your week.
