Restoration Shed

The Restoration Shed sits just outside Colchester and is exactly what it says on the tin - a working museum where vintage machinery and vehicles actually get fixed up rather than just sitting behind velvet ropes. You walk in expecting a stuffy collection of static exhibits and instead find engineers with spanners genuinely restoring old tractors, steam engines and industrial kit. It's the sort of place where things move, make noise and smell of oil and hard graft.

This works brilliantly if you've got kids who are bored stiff by conventional museums, or if you're into engineering and want to see restoration happen live rather than read about it in a label. Adults fascinated by how things work - proper mechanical stuff, not digital nonsense - will find themselves lingering far longer than planned. The place has real character because it's run by people who actually care about the machines, not by a committee.

Visit midweek if you can; weekends draw crowds and you won't get the quiet moments to chat with the restorers about what they're doing. Allow a couple of hours minimum, more if you're the tinkering type. Colchester itself has enough going on for a full day trip, and if you're staying at any of the caravan parks nearby - Rushbanks Farm or Colchester Country Park are both within five miles - the Shed makes a decent wet-weather option or a half-day when you fancy something different from the usual park routine.
